Social Media Connects Haiti Medical Team

Some people will argue that social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and blogs like this one are a waste of time.  Some will even go as far to say that social media has nothing to do with real life at all.  I see how both of the statements are true for many.  For me and many others, I see it a little bit differently.  We’ve talked a lot on this blog about Social Media Responsibility- that you can Use Social Media to Gain Influence thus Taking the ME Out of Social MEdia!  The below story is proof that social media tools can contribute to significant influence, allowing us to draw people together from around the world to build up communities and change culture.  Here is the story:

So a friend of mine from LifeChurch.tv named Diana Beaty felt called to lead a group of medical professionals to Haiti this summer with Samaritan’s Purse.  I posted a video in May entitled Help Out In Haiti, asking for help from medical professionals that would be interested.  Through Diana’s connections and several connections we were able to make through Facebook, Twitter, LifeChurch.tv and TheWayItCouldBe.com, she was able to form a team of 13 medical professionals that will hit the ground in Haiti this weekend, Aug. 1st!  Below is a video from a good friend that heard about the trip through Facebook and this blog (with a message from Diana below).

Here is a text from Diana; please pray for her group: Hey Chad- will you guys send out some prayers for the two teams that are going to serve in Haiti. We have two teams of some awesome people willing step out and serve the medical needs of those in Haiti with Samaritans Purse. The first team leaves on Saturday morning and the second team leaves the following Saturday. Please pray for safety, opportunities the Lord will present to us, comfort, ability for us to connect with the Haitian people and share the love of the Lord, and for the families-comfort and peace of heart and mind. Thanks!! Diana

To the many people that shared Diana’s story on Twitter, Facebook or elsewhere- thank you.  You may have been the connection point that helped create awareness for this story.  You may be a big part of the hundreds of people that will recieve medical care in Haiti over the next week.  You may be a part of the thousands impacted by the Haitian medical trainees being equipped to provide long term health care in Haiti.

To those that have given up hope for the Church being united- see what a small group of people are doing to work together for on Jesus.  Hold on to hope that the Church can stand together to make a difference.

To those using social media sites like Facebook, Twitter or Blogs- It doesn’t HAVE to be all about you.  Find your voice.  Tell your story.  Make a connection.  Have a lasting impact.  You can make a lasting difference.

To those that have a dream to do something BIG- Look at what happened when Diana stepped out in faith to organize this trip.  She didn’t wait around for someone to buy her a ticket and drive her to the airport.  You don’t have to wait around either.  Put some prayer and legs to your dreams and see what God will do.  Take a risk.

To those flying solo- Consider partnering together with organizations like Samaritan’s Purse to make a difference.  Consider partnering with the local church to reach out to the world to make a lasting impact. Don’t fly solo.

To those that are going to Haiti or that have family members on this trip- Thanks for your sacrifice.  You are BEING the Church to a broken and dying world.  You are a difference maker.

30 Things Twitter Is…NOT!

If I asked you what Twitter IS, I would would get a variety of answers. Twitter.com says that it is without a doubt the best way to share and discover what is happening right now.   Some would say Twitter is the best thing since sliced bread.  I would explain Twitter as a useful social media tool for building relationships (Taking the ME Out of Social MEdia).

How about if I asked you what Twitter Is…NOT? I posted this on Twitter & Facebook recently: Help write a blog post(thx in advance)! Complete this sentence: Twitter is NOT _____. Below are the responses I received.  The list is a variety of both interesting and fabulous responses!  I think my favorite was John Snyder (Twitter, Blog), who said simply, “Twitter is not the destination.” I hope you enjoy 30 Things Twitter Is…NOT:

Liz227 Twitter is NOT the singles spot.
smalltownpastor is not a substitute for friendship
stefantribble twitter is NOT a place to plug your product.
stevn11 an acceptable substitute for real life relationships.
ajkasza — a chat room!
LanceMartin the classifieds section of the Internet
OneWriter …is NOT therapy. But it should be.
karenbyrne for telling everyone how great you are
ForteMG your momma’s form of communicating, for now.
duane_scott “considered a dating service.”
caridreams long winded
KevinDeShazo …..a replacement for face to face community
ServingStrong Twitter is NOT intimacy
Liz227 Twitter is NOT _____.match.com
Johnwsnyder twitter is not the destination
joe_sewell Twitter is NOT a micro-burst thesis distributor.
JShatlock Twitter is not like facebook or Twitter is not unhelpful
AmandaSims a place to make malicious fun of people or pimp products & services. Also, not a marketing plan in and of itself.
JJWhiteWave one’s salvation!!
hrhsar inception
Sandy Collum Sandmeyer as relevant as it thinks it is. Let me clarify. I find myself not watching Twitter as much as Facebook. I used to regularly watch Twitter, but I can’t keep up with both. I don’t like to get Tweets to my phone…
Caleb Fritz cool; Facebook; insane; stupid?
Nathan Heath something you get paid to do. excluding yourself.
Miche Traina Your place to air out your dirty laundry!
Charles Stewart Flemming ‎…the best place to be subtle or make a complex point.
Steven Paul ‎… to be used as a primary communication tool by itself. Informing someone you’re heading off to Starbuck’s isn’t what we normally consider valuable conversation. Instead leverage your blog by incorporating Twitter as a way to tweet alerts to new blog post entries or discussion threads to your followers.

Which one is your favorite?  What else would you add to the list?  Twitter is NOT _____.  Love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Who Loved The 80′s?

If you liked the 80′s, you’ll appreciate this video and perhaps have a laugh or two… This song has been stuck in my head for 24 hours, so I decided to inspire you as well.

HERE is my uptown girl.  I remember in the early 80′s riding my skateboard, wearing my long jams and cons and listening to this song on my yellow Sony Walkman. The video was actually pretty edgy at the time. Does it bring back any memories for you? What did you love about the 80′s??? Love to hear in the comments!

Make a Memory

Went sailing today.
Made a big memory with the love of my life.
No wind needed.
No big boat.
No dock.
Just sprinklers.
A little imagination.
A little love.
And a little time…
Time to Make a Memory.

What memory can you make today? Why is it so easy to zip by every day without making memories?? Love to hear your thoughts in the comments below…

God Can’t Hear Us

handsThis is a re-post from the fall: I’m not sure whether you believe in God or not.  For some time in my life I did, but He seemed like this far off idea that probably wouldn’t want much to do with someone like me.  My past was too stained and my life was too insignificant.  Surely he didn’t care enough to hear my concerns or care about the details of my life.  I thought, surely God Can’t Hear Us.

Fast forward a couple decades.  A year ago, my little girl Meg used to wake up in the morning and play for awhile in her bed.  At some point she would realize that we weren’t around and get scared and cry.  This is what one-year-olds do.  They are good at it.  Still, the thought of being alone is pretty scary for people of any age.

Then, something changed for Meg as she got older.  I think she learned that we were not going anywhere and could hear her cries from her room. She learned that we loved her.  She could ask for something and we would hear her and respond.  Now when she wakes ups in the morning you hear, “You know where my pacey is momma?  Or momma, you know where water is? Or momma, I wanna take a shirt off! Or you sleepy dadda? I’m not sleepy!”  She knows now she can ask.  She knows she is loved and not alone.  She knows we can hear her.  She knows we love her and won’t ever leave her.

So, how about you? Do you ever feel alone?  Do you ever feel like God doesn’t exist, if he did he surely wouldn’t allow the bad situation in your life or allow injustice or hurt? Do you ever think God doesn’t hear you?

I believe that God gave us the choice to love him, to believe in him.  Like, we don’t have to.  So with choice, invariably we mess it up and hurt other people and are imperfect and do stupid things, it’s our choice.  Perhaps, this is why there is so much injustice in the world and so much pain and hurt.  Man too often makes the wrong choices and the effect can be catastrophic.

So God gives us the choice to believe in him, truly an act of real love.  He awaits.  He has revealed himself to us in his creation, in our thoughts, and even in our children.  He awaits for you today to cry out to him with your deepest concerns or even what you think may be insignificant.  Ask Him to make Himself known to you; ask Him for a chance at a relationship with your Creator through the life and sacrifice of his son Jesus Christ.  Ask Him for a new start today. Surely, He will hear and listen.

Why it is sometimes easy to believe that God doesn’t hear us?  Love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

A Bug’s Life & Leadership

This is a 9 second lesson that will save you lots of grief down the road as a leader, parent or individual. In this clip, the Queen from A Bug’s Life is confronted by the Hoppers for not producing the “suggested” food quota. Watch what mistake the Queen makes…

A strong leader…accepts blame and gives credit for victories!
A weak leader…gives blame to others and takes credit for victories!

Why do some of us dodge responsiblity when stuff hits the fan?  Why do others of us take full responsibility when things go wrong?  What’s the difference in this type of leader?  Love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Why Religion Doesn’t Work

For many years of my life, I was religious… and it didn’t work!

This video from Mark Driscoll  offers up a simple explanation for the difference between Religion and Jesus- Why Religion Doesn’t Work. I think it will move you and would love to hear your feedback…(& you know someone that needs to watch this, so please feel free to share this post.)

Well, what do you think? What is the biggest difference that Driscoll pointed out?  Why does religion leave us so unfulfilled?  Love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
